After graduating from Cal State Northridge in 1983, Dean joined World Savings in 1984. During his tenure, Dean was active in business development at the Company. In 1988, he pioneered World’s Wholesale Lending Division and was responsible for developing their proprietary Preferred Mortgage Broker Training Program. Dean was also a member of the elite Golden Circle Society at World Savings from 1986 to 1989.
After numerous years on the wholesale lending side of the industry, Dean joined a local mortgage broker to focus on building his clientele. He utilized his business development experience to revolutionize the Company’s lending practices.

Carlos began his mortgage banking career in 1987 with Columbia Savings and Loan. He then went to work for World Savings in 1990. His tenure at World Savings started as a retail rep where he earned various President Club Awards and was then promoted to a wholesale position where he continued his career with World Savings until 2008. Carlos currently holds a broker license with the Bureau of Real Estate and Mortgage Loan Originators License.
Carlos always has the borrowers needs at the top of the priority list. He believes that each situation is unique and that different scenarios should be presented to the borrower in order to make an educated decision.
Carlos attended and graduated Katella High School in 1980. He then went to Fullerton Junior College and played baseball for them in 1981-1982. He recently was inducted into the Baseball Wall of Honor at Fullerton College. From there Carlos played Division 1 College Baseball at Fresno State. The 1984 team is part of the Fresno State Hall of Fame.
When he is not working you will find Carlos attending his son Nicks baseball games or watching his son Alex play Lacrosse. Carlos has been married to his beautiful wife Maite for 22 years.
Born and raised in Indianapolis and currently residing in Coto de Caza, Paul Scheper earns a fun living as a mortgage lender (FHA, VA, Conventional, Reverse, Jumbo, and Portfolio). He has owned several companies (Barron Financial, Reverse Mortgage Training Institute, Harvard Capital Mortgage) and has successfully spearheaded several corporate divisions (Greenlight Loans, Loan Link, Sunwest Mortgage, Liberty Home Equity, and Back Bay Funding). Micah is also in charge of secondary at Back Bay Funding, which entails ensuring the accuracy of all mortgage rates and products with all investors. Mark was born and raised in Orange County, California. Even as a child, Mark was fascinated with financial markets. As a young adult this interest lead him to the Mortgage banking industry. He began his career in 2000, where he started as a mortgage assistant for Nation Wide Lending, LLC. After learning the aspects of mortgage lending in 2002, he set off to join Sage Credit Company, LLC. While at Sage Credit, he established himself as a well versed Sr. mortgage consultant. Mark, then was promoted to an upper management position. As a manager he was able to mentor new mortgage professionals, instill hard work ethics and the client centric approach that made him successful. He currently holds a California bureau of real estate license, a mortgage originators license, and a property and casualty insurance license. Today he is married to his high school sweetheart and together they have two young children. Mark is active in his community, assisting in charitable programs and volunteering at his church. Jake is a caretaker for his parents both 89 years young. Jake also enjoys spending time with his nieces & nephews Bree, Matt & Gabi. He also enjoys running & biking thru Corona del Mar.

Tim began his banking career in 1982 directly after graduating from Mater Dei High School. His first position was with Security Pacific National Bank where he worked his way up from an entry level position, verifying check signatures, to Assistant Vice President in Accounts and Loans. He then took a position as a Branch Office Manager with another local bank before going into business for himself in 1992. He has been a mortgage loan originator since 1991 and has experience in both residential and commercial lending. Tim currently holds a Bureau of Real Estate Broker’s License, a Mortgage Loan Originator’s License, and a CA Department of Insurance Property and Casualty License. He is an excellent listener and strategist who believes that the best loan for you is the one that you need right now. He balances current and immediate needs with long term strategies that work to accomplish your family goals, keeping you safe, secure, and comfortable.
Tim was previously a Board Member with the Calaveras County Chamber of Commerce, is a former member of the Moose Lodge, and currently is the 2nd Vice Commander of the Sons of the American Legion, Post 291 in Newport Beach, CA. Taking care of our Veterans and First Responders is a personal undertaking for him, as his father served in the US Army and is also a retired Battalion Chief from the Orange County Fire Department. Bret Smalley has been working in mortgage finance for the past 18 years. Bret’s previous position was as Director of First Carlsbad Mortgage where he was responsible for all of the processing and underwriting for the company. In addition, he originated new business for the company and maintained the relationships with all escrow and title services. Bret and his longtime friend and partner, Greg Porter, started residential mortgage operations in 2009 and grew the company from a standing start into a business that was well respected in the lending community and was driven by referrals from satisfied clients. Between the two partners, First Carlsbad Mortgage originated over $75 million in residential mortgage loans. He joined Starlight Capital Advisors, the parent company of First Carlsbad Mortgage, upon its inception in 2009, in order to service the growing renewable energy market.
In the first year of Starlight’s operation, they consulted on over $3.6 billion in renewable energy projects. He considers this sector to be the most important of the country’s economy and future growth. For the last fourteen years, Bret has worked as a senior loan officer and agent for several Southern California mortgage and real estate brokers. In that time, he has personally originated over $250 million in residential and commercial loans in California, Arizona, Hawaii and Nevada. Additionally, he has represented buyers for residential purchases, for both primary residences and income properties. Bret has emphasized his commitment to exceptional customer service and accurate communication throughout his career. Bret started his career at Long Beach Mortgage Company, one of the first dedicated sub-prime lenders in the country, at their corporate offices in Orange, CA.
He started at the ground level as a data integrity auditor, but was supervising the same department within the first six months. He moved on to a position as a compliance auditor, working alongside the company’s risk management department and assisting in the company’s securitization of their loans. Bret was then recruited into the company’s top production team as a funder. Working with this team, he was instrumental in surpassing the firm’s quarterly and annual funding goals for three years.
In addition to his own team’s production, Bret frequently assisted other teams during their month-end closings, eventually funding loans in 38 states. While with this team, Bret worked as an underwriter, account manager and appraisal reviewer. Bret attended the University of Southern California where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology with an emphasis in Neuropsychology. Bret has held his California BRE Real Estate Sales License since 2001 and his National Mortgage Licensing System and Registry (NMLS) License since the inception of that system.
Maia Parenti, also known as “The Queen,” is our Fulfillment Manager working on correspondent files to fund and ensure investor purchase. Being the daughter of John Parenti, Maia joined Back Bay Funding in 2003 as a Loan Processor. After several years of blood, sweat and oh so many tears, she was promoted to Processing Manager – a title she takes loosely as she considers our BBF processors as close friends (and cohorts). In her spare time, Maia likes to hang with her dogs, go on hikes and eat vegan cupcakes.

Brenda has been with our company since February 2014, originally starting with us in our insurance division then transitioning into her current roll of Compliance Coordinator and Assistant to John Parenti and Dean Valeriano.
Brenda resides in Las Flores, CA with her two adorable boys, Zac & Tysen. She also enjoys red wine, music concerts and all things coconut!
Renee Monroe has been one of the hardest working members of Back Bay Funding for 14 years. Throughout her years being a loan processor, Renee has become an expert in her field and has proved time and time again that no problem is too big for her to handle.
When Renee is not pouring her heart and soul into her work, she enjoys spending time with her two children and watching the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.
I have dedicated the past 20 years of my career to being a mortgage loan processor. I must say that I have had the opportunity to see and experience many different markets over this span of time. With these varied changes, being the best that you can be requires the ability and focus to stay on top of all of the regulation and product modifications, in order to be able to educate and guide your prospective borrowers.
